PIERCE, FRANKLIN
(1804 - 1869) Fourteenth President of the United States who initiated the Gadsden Purchase, opening up the Northwest for settlement. Good content L.S. as brigadier general in the Mexican War, 2pp. 4to., Concord, NH, Dec. 14, 1848, to President James K. Polk, seeking government employment for Lt. John McNab. In part: ""...I take the liberty to commend to your favorable notice the brass Lieut. John McNab late of the 9th Regt. U.S. Army. The sudden disbandonment of the ten new Regiments has left him at this time without employment, and it strikes me that the circumstances under which he entered the army...his intelligence, integrity and admirable qualifications...entitle him to some place in the service of the Government..."". Two small holes at right margin, otherwise boldly signed and very good.
