(PICKETT CHARGE CONFEDERATE OFFICER DRUNK ON DUTY)
War-date printed circular of Confederate General Orders No. 42, 1p. 8vo., Richmond, Apr. 13, 1863 concerning, in part: "…Major Kirkwood Otey, 11th Virginia Infantry…[is charged with]…drunkenness on duty…". Otey was sentenced to be cashiered and dismissed from service but, "…in consideration of his previous good character…", was restored to command. At Gettysburg, Otey was wounded while helping led his regiment in Picket's Charge. He was again wounded during the battle of Drewry's Bluff in 1864 and surrendered as colonel of the regiment at Appomattox. Minor spotting, else very good.
