<B>PHOTO OF PENITENTIARY WHERE LINCOLN CONSPIRATORS WERE HUNG, CIRCA 1860S.</B></I> Eight conspirators were caught in the days after Lincoln's assassination and tried by a military court. They were found guilty on June 30th and given various sentences depending upon their involvement. Lewis Powell (Paine), David Herold, George Atzerodt, and Mary Surratt were charged with conspiring with Booth, along with various other crimes, and hanged on July 7, 1865. <BR><BR>This sepia photograph of the<B> </B></I>Old Arsenal Penitentiary, Washington D. C. (Fort Lesley J. McNair today), has paper tag on verso in period ink: <I>“Photo of the Penitentiary where Mrs. Surratt, Payne, Harrold</B></I> sic (Herold), & Atzerott sic <I>Atzerodt were hung and Booth buried”</B></I>.<BR><BR><B>Provenance: </B></I><I>Al.
