From the Hollywood series, in which diCorcia photographed teens, prostitutes, and drug addicts on or around Santa Monica Boulevard, these images are scenes from an area notorious for its artifice. As the title suggests, diCorcia asked each model for their name, age, hometown, and fee charged for their time. The models were added at the last minute to complete the vision, but every detail of the scene was carefully planned in advance. diCorcia emerged as a conceptual photographer in the late 1980s. In 1989, he received a grant from the NEA that helped make this series possible, but only after agreeing not to photograph any "obscene" material. diCorica paid all his models, many of whom were homeless kids, drug addicts, and prostitutes, with grant money. The HOLLYWOOD series is the first organized series produced by diCorcia. He has gone on to do STREETWORK and most recently HEADS. This image was one of the highlights from the MoMA exhibition STRANGERS in 1993, and also appeared on the cover of the catalogue for the artist's 1995 retrospective at MoMA.
