PHILADELPHIA horn, French & Indian War Period, by famed "Pointed Tree Carver," for Pittsburgh / Forbe's Road market. Converted to Revolutionary War Period rifleman's ball horn. Engraved by the “Pointed Tree Carver,” the best known commercial horn artist of the French and Indian War. At the base of the horn, “PHILADELPHIA” is inscribed in a riband above a steeple, all that remains of the city after the horn was damaged and cut back (now 7”) to serve as a ball horn. Consequently it can be readily stood on its base, displaying engraving in correct orientation. Philadelphia horns are extremely rare. The “Pointed Tree” carver produced mostly horns intended for the New York to Quebec campaigns, which have New York at the base of the horn. This horn, evidently intended for the “Forbe’s Road” and Fort Pitt (nascent Pittsburg) market, has a vacant owner’s cartouche. Intact, this horn would be $20,000 plus. However, this cataloger find this horn infinitely more interesting than a mint horn that was never carried and went nowhere. Est: $3,500 - $7,000
