<B>PETRIFIED WOOD SLAB</B></I><BR> <I>Araguaina-Filadelfia <BR>Permian <BR>Maranhao Sedimentary Basin, Tocantins, Brazil</B></I><BR>Buried in the debris flows, ancient trees were covered with sediments so rapidly that the oxygen levels were severely reduced and degradation did not occur. Over the millions of years, the wood fiber was replaced by silica. The end results are petrified wood logs that look like trees but have the weight of stone. Because of the silica replacement, the petrified wood takes a good polish. This polishing brings out the strong patterns detailing the growth cycles of the ancient wood itself, as seen in this specimen of petrified wood.
