PETER SEKAER (American, 1901-1950) HOUSE WITH SHUTTERED WINDOWS, NEW ORLEANS authenticated and signed by Sekaer's wife, "This is an original photograph by PETER SEKAER, c. 1939 Elizabeth S. Rothschild" in pencil on verso numerous numerical notations in pencil on verso vintage gelatin silver print 4 7/8 x 3 3/4 in. (12.4 x 9.5 cm) circa 1939 PROVENANCE Private Collection, NEW YORK Peter Sekaer was a Danish-born graphic designer and photographer who traveled with Walker Evans as his assistant in the southern states in 1935 and 1936, often photographing alongside him. He later worked for the Rural Electrification Administration, where he was occasionally "loaned out" to other government agencies such as the U.S. Housing Authority and the Office of Indian Affairs. The present lot was likely created when Sekaer was working for the former agency. U.S.H.A. often requested "before" and "after" pictures. The careful attention that Sekaer paid to this modest house suggests that this is a "before" shot of a doomed structure.
