PERUVIAN CHIMU BELT
Hand-woven belt from the Chimu culture of northern coastal regions of Peru, a people that grew and flourished from 900-1400 AD. The cotton belt measure about 84" long, 2 1/4" wide, and bears an alternating red and white geometric pattern. There is present a circular 3 1/4" dia. woven "face" which reset upon a cotton backing which once adorned the front of the belt (now detached). This belt was gifted to a New York family by a prominent decorator in 1995. Chimor grew out of the remnants of Moche culture, and its people were known to have worshipped the moon. They were conquered by the Inca and then the Spanish, with whom they assimilated. Rare.
