PERU, Lima, cob 8 reales Royal (galano), 1686 R, extremely rare, NGC XF 40 (oversized slab), finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Millennia (stated on label), ex-Ponte. S-L7; KM-R24; Cal-579. 26.86 grams. An immense 8 reales topping 46mm in diameter, in fact wide enough to show that no outer border of dots was put into the pillars-side die, the legend on that side of course complete (with impressively full third date 1686) and the one on the cross side nearly so but truncated by a slightly off-center strike, the cross-lions-castles and pillars-and-waves just as full and sharp as possible for the grade and graced with a lovely old toning all over, with natural flan-crack in center, an extremely rare piece not just as a Lima Royal example but also as unholed, otherwise rather similar to Lázaro 2 (same large size, albeit not an exact die-match). Pedigreed to the Millennia Collection (Goldberg auction of May 2008, lot 1152) and the Luis R. Ponte Collection.
