PERIOD CIVIL WAR CARTE DE VISITE ALBUM WITH FRAMED LITHOGRAPH OF THE LINCOLN FAMILY
PERIOD CIVIL WAR CARTE DE VISITE ALBUM WITH FRAMED LITHOGRAPH OF THE LINCOLN FAMILY. A nice little Civil War period patriotic album with 22 photographs of mostly political and military figures of the day. It came from the Clough family of New Hampshire and there are notations in ballpoint pen throughout the album. Some of the notable photographs include Abraham Lincoln (with “A. Lincoln penned on the front bottom-NOT the President’s signature although the notation reads that the signature is authentic), Stephen Douglass, Salmon Chase, Governor Todd (Ohio), Governor Andrew (Mass.), and Schuyler Colfax. Mixed in are some unidentified civilians (family members?) and period engravings of other cabinet members and Congressman of the period. CONDITION: Aside form the ball point pen inscriptions on pages of the album, the photos and engravings are very good. The lithograph illustrates Abraham Lincoln reading to his wife Mary and his sons Robert and Tad. The lithograph was published by John Dainty of Philadelphia after a painting by F. Schell. The time of the sitting would be 1865, since it was this year that Robert was commissioned a captain on U.S. Grant’s staff and he is shown wearing a captain’s uniform. The litho is housed in a period frame, sight size about 10-1/2” x 13-1/2”. CONDITION: Overall very good with very little foxing to borders. 4-51377 CW9
