A two-sheet TLS on Whitman College Office of the President, Walla Walla, Washington letterhead, September 10, 1930, to Edward M. Chapman. Penrose thanks Chapman for his books; refers to the stenographic support he receives from his wife, daughter, and students; and chats about academic topics. Of Whitman, he writes: "I suppose that Whitman College is one of the few institutions still surviving in the United States which maintains the New England Tradition of requiring its students to get an acquaintance with philosophy...," and that it has, "...required them to gain what few Americans now do, gain a philosophical attitude towards life." 11in. x 8 1/2in. Condition: Two vertical and one horizontal fold, other light creases, hole punches. EDWARD MORTIMER CHAPMAN (1862-1952) was a Connecticut pastor, academic, and author. He graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1890. Chapman was a descendant of Robert Chapman, one of the first settlers of Saybrook, Connecticut (c. 1635). He served as pastor of Old Lyme Church from 1906 to 1915. Chapman€™s works integrated his wide-ranging theological, literary, and historical interests. This lot and the other Chapman-related documents offered in this sale were part of a collection of his family papers.
