Cal. 78. NSN. Bbl. 42". Sourced from a Brown Bess is stamped "G" toward breech end & w/ remnants of 79th regiment markings. Lock also appears to be from a Brown Bess, but no markings are present. It has slightly arched rounded plate, bridled friction frizzen & feather spring w/ early style dbl. swell finial. Rnd. bodied cock is of serpentine form. Stock of very fine curly or tiger stripe maple has deeply fluted comb & palm swell near thimble. It is finished & shaped in Brown Bess form utilizing reclaimed brass furniture. Trigger guard is incised w/ the letter "T" on bow. Steel ramrod has button head. CONDITION: good. Bbl. has dark brown almost black patina w/ some heat discoloration toward breech end. Lock also dark, is considerably rusted internally. Stock w/ old oil refinish to highlight wood grain. Brass w/ evidence of old cleaning, metal nicely toned. Lock is operable.
