<B>Pedro Gasto </B></I>(Spanish 1908-1997)<B><BR></B></I><I>Saint Miguel and The Devil<BR></B></I>Oil on canvas<BR>36 x 25-1/2 inches (91.4 x 64.8 cm)<BR> Pedro Gasto chose the biblical theme of Saint Michael, the Archangel and his battle with the devil as the subject of this dramatic painting. While mentioned in the Old Testament, the stories of Michael's battles with the devil appear throughout the New Testament, particularly in the Book of Revelation as Michael throws the devil from heaven. It is Gasto's interpretation of that battle that he depicts here.<BR><BR>Fiery orange and deep blacks come alive in this picture of Michael on the right side of the canvas facing the devilish figures that surround him. Contorted shapes lead the viewer to make out the hellish forms--tails, masks, legs that are the abstract form of the devil according to Gasto.
