CHARLES WILLSON PEALE </b>(1741 - 1827) American artist, a portraitist whose Portrait Gallery of the Heroes of the Revolution was the first art gallery in the unites States(1782), founded the Peale Museum of Natural History, and founded a family of painters. Excessively rare A.E.S. penned at the bottom of a partly-printed D.S., 1p. 8vo., Philadelphia, May 31, 1780, an order that Peale be paid the sum of 362 pounds for his 22 days of service in the state assembly. At bottom he writes: "<i>June 20th 1780 Rec'd the above. Chas. Willson Peale</i>". Light toning, else very good. Auction records show no sale of a Peale autograph for the past 23 years!<b>$3,000-4,000</b>
