PAYNE, WILLIAM H.
63. WILLIAM H. PAYNE (1830-1904) Confederate brigadier general who as colonel in Stuart's ride around the Union army during the Gettysburg campaign was wounded and captured. Later he commanded forces at 3rd Winchester and Cedar Creek. An exceptionally nice 2pp. 4to. A.L.S., Warrenton, Oct. 4, 1879, in which Payne writes his sister with words of reassurance about their brother J.S. Payne, a scout in the 5th U.S. Cavalry during the Ute War of 1879. At the time, the 5th U.S. Cavalry had managed to have a portion of its number, including Payne's brother, cut off from the rest of the Army. In part:"...I am sure he will come out with honor to himself. A lot of old Confederates who know what War and danger are, have talked the matter over & we all agree in believing in his ultimate rescue. The news of the dear fellow's peril excites, but does not alarm me. I wish that I had command of the rescuing column or was with him to share his danger & his honor. Don't be unhappy, my dear .Mollie had to endure more than this hundreds of times....In addressing a meeting today and referring to him as my brother the Old Black Horse troop which surrounded me uttered the wish that they & I were near enough to help him. Dear Lucy cheer up: He will come back safe and covered with honor...". Very good. $500-700
