Historic Paul Revere Engraved Minuteman “Sword in Hand” Vignette Three Shillings Massachusetts December 7, 1775 Issue
Colony of Massachusetts Bay. December 7, 1775. Three Shillings. Paul Revere Engraved “Sword in Hand” issue. Massachusetts “Minuteman” Holding a Copy of the MAGNA CHARTA vignette printed upon its reverse. Genuine. ERROR Due date text “Deemr.” for December 7, 1781. Conservation. Choice Very Fine.
Fr. MA-178. An extremely rare “ERROR” Due date text spelling, “Deemr.” (for December), Three Shillings note for which only 6,250 were printed, with three different Due dates within the text. It is the only denomination to have this “ERROR” engraved text. This genuine Paul Revere engraved “Sword in Hand” note has a very choice appearance for the grade. The paper is solid and the strong print has impressive, excellent centering on both its face and back, all evenly within four full margins. This note has the clear light tan-brown signature, “J Wheeler” being that of John Wheeler. The edges of the paper and the corner tips are very clean and quite even in circulation. The deft sealed centerfold edge splits and light conservation appear invisible. All of the text and historic designs are very clear and easily readable. The reverse vignette of the Colonial Massachusetts “Minuteman” holding his sword in his outstretched left hand, and a copy of the “MAGNA CHARTA” document in his right, is very distinct, clear and perfectly centered. This great looking note is the single finest example of this rare Paul Revere engraved “Sword in Hand” issue with the “Error” Due date text, “Deemr.” we have ever offered, being nearly forty years.
