PATTON, GEORGE S.
(1885 - 1945) "Old Blood and Guts" was one of the finest tank commanders in history, rolling his forces through Tunisia, Sicily, France and Germany until halted at the Rhine. Good content T.L.S. "G. S. Patton, Jr." on his personal letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Fort Meyer, Va., Feb. 11, 1935 to his friend Alfred W. Carter, General Manager of the enormous Parker Ranch in Hawaii from which Patton purchased some of his favorite horses. Apparently typing the letter himself, Patton writes in part: "…We hope to sail over from San Pedro in our own schooner and try in a small way to emulate some of your seagoing experiences. When and if we get there I hope we can have some sails together. Mrs. Patton is so fond of the War Shot colt that she is bring[ing] him all the way back with her…he will be one of the most traveled horses in the world…Hukupu, the big chestnut…is really one of the greatest jumpers in America. Last year at West Point I placed second on him…". War Shot's Heritage was superb - his ancestor's had won eight Derbys! Sold with a second letter by Patton's wife, BEATRICE AYER PATTON to Carter's son Hartwell who would also manage the Parker Ranch, 4pp. 4to. on her husband's letterhead, Fort Shafter [1937?], a gossipy letter mentioning her family wining a horse event, a social meeting with the prominent Dillingham family, and so on. Finally, with an A.L.S. to Hartwell from Patton's daughter, RUTH ELLEN PATTON, 4pp. 8vo., Fort Shafter, 1937, also mentioning Carter's fine thoroughbreds and adding: "…Daddy won the Novelty and the Officers' Charger on red Fox…". Three pieces, very good.
