PASTEUR, LOUIS
(1822 - 1895) French chemist and biologist who developed antibodies for rabies and anthrax and disproved theories of spontaneous generation. Fine content A.L.S. "L. Pasteur" 1p. 8vo., Paris, June 30, 1885, in French to an academic Secretary, in part: "...Your new candidate for Sciences at the Ecole Normale has reported to the director of studies M. Tannery, that he holds count with your letter in being persuaded. I strongly regret not having the power to assist in tomorrow's solemn meeting. Excuse me, I beg you, I understand that M. Goblet is coming tomorrow to the Ecole Normale for the inauguration of the bust of the valiant and unhappy [Louis] Thuillier, who died in Alexandria of cholera, victim of his devotion to science...". LOUIS THUILLIER was Pasteur's assistant, sent by him to Germany to experiment with vaccinations for sheep and cattle which were produced from a weakened strand of anthrax which stimulated the immune system. Thuillier and Pasteur enjoyed a lengthy and fruitful correspondence which was later published. Boldly written and very good condition.
