PART OF HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM STANDING ROCK RESERVATION
PART OF HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM STANDING ROCK RESERVATION. Allegedly written by a Corporal McCartney of Company G, 1st Infantry in 1876. The portion of the letter we have is on old lined paper, 7-1/2" wide by about 4-1/2" high, written on both sides in old quill ink. He states that the whole 7th Cavalry and General Terry was here with three extra companies of the 17th Infantry. Four companies on this side with Terry and Reno and eight companies of cavalry and two companies of infantry and one company with artillery pieces under the command of General Sturgis. He goes on to say that they disarmed the Indians and took away all their ponies. On the other side he says that last Monday while they were issuing beef to the Indians two of them had a "row". He says they stepped out of the corral and "fought a good square duel with Henry Rifles". He relates that one was killed and the other was only wounded even though they were only about 20 paces apart. He states "it was a brave action but I don't want to see any more such". He says they fired about four shots each and that Col. Johnston was there too and says "they are plucky men". The last thing he says is that there are about 1,000 Indians. Is accompanied by a handwritten letter from John S. du Mont dated 10 May 1990 to R.L. Wilson. He states that he found the Corporal McCarthy letter in an old scrapbook of Indian photographs that he had bought. He said that is was glued in place and that was all there was and he thinks he gave it to Bill Sweet years ago. CONDITION: Slightly yellowed with a spot or two of foxing and 1/3-fold lines, all writing is legible. Ex. du Mont Collection. 4-53313
