PARRISH, MAXFIELD
(1870 - 1966) American painter and illustrator, best known as an illustrator for advertisements, magazines, and such books as Mother Goose in Prose and The Golden Age. A most intriguing A.L.S. signed as ""Stephen Parrish"" 2pp. 8vo., Venice, Apr. 1, 1886, written as a sixteen-year-old boy while acting as a secretary for his father, engraver Stephen Parrish, during a trip to Europe. In his beautiful, characteristic hand to Benjamin W. Austin, regarding the elder Parrish's election to an artistic society, in part: ""...Yours of the 12th ult....has reached me informing me of my election as honorary member of the 'Northwestern Literary & Historical Soc'y.' I accept the honor with much pleasure. It is always gratifying to deserve well of one's country even if it be in so quiet & humble a way as painting pictures or etching plates, and your appreciation of my work will be I assure you another incentive to renewed effort..."". From 1884 to 1886, Parrish traveled widely with his parents throughout Europe, taking in the culture and arts there. The two pages are mounted vertically on another sheet, with the second somewhat trimmed, otherwise in very good condition. A most unusual Parrish example, worthy of further research.
