Alleges persecution to be the real cause of disaffection among Irish Roman catholics and advocates the removal of their grievances. "Although part of the protestant ascendancy, Parnell opposed the union and was a staunch defender of the Catholics. He maintained good relations with his tenants at a time when land agitation was almost endemic. In 1804 he published, at London An Inquiry into the Causes of Popular Discontents in Ireland, a partly satirical pamphlet calling for Catholic emancipation, which ran to three editions by 1805. In 1806 he responded to the controversy it had provoked in Observations explanatory and critical, on a pamphlet entitled, ‘An inquiry into the causes of popular discontents in Ireland’, also published in pamphlet form in London and Dublin." - ODNB.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) NEWENHAM ( Thomas ). Three editions were published within the first year. “Let every man suspend both his business and his pleasures. Let every man turn all his thoughts on the destruction of French robbers, ravishers, murderers, and tyrants.” Newenham (1762–1831), Cork-born writer on Irish affairs, Elected member for Clonmel in the Irish parliament of 1798, he was one of the steadiest opponents of the Act of Union and became one of the principal authorities on the Irish economy. He also tried to promote the reunion of the Catholic and protestant churches. He wrote a number of pamphlets on Catholic emancipation and Irish affairs.
