PARKERS’ SNOW & COMPANY RIFLE MUSKET WITH MILLER
CONVERSION. Cal. 58 RF. S# 2059. Bbl. measures 39”. William & George Miller invented & patented the Miller conversion system for .58 cal. rifle muskets. Between 1865 & 1867, the Meridian Manufacturing Company converted 2,000 M1861 muskets, most of which were made by Parker’s Snow & Co. The alteration allowed the breech to swing upward to facilitate loading the new .58 cal. rimfire self contained cartridge. This rifle musket was altered from an 1863 dated M1861 Parkers’ Snow & Company example. Bbl. has a front & rear folding sight. Top of breech is marked, “W.H. & G.W. MILLER PATENT MAY 23 1865” & “MERIDEN MANFG. CO. MERIDEN CONN.”. Serial number “2059” is stamped inside the breech. Lock is marked “1863” in back of the hammer. In front of the hammer is marked w/ an American eagle over “U.S.” & “PARKERS’ SNOW & CO. MERIDEN, CONN.”. Iron trigger guard, butt plate, bbl. bands, nosecap, sling swivels & ramrod. CONDITION: bbl. has a faded partial plum brown finish as does the lock & other iron components. Lock holds both full & half cock. Stock has a short crack at the extreme butt. There is a long rectangular loss of finish on the right flat of the butt, likely due to tape removal that would be easily restorable. Good bore w/ strong rifling. (01-18778/BF). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,000.
