112. [PAPER MAKER’S COMMONPLACE BOOK]

Eclectic late 19th century copy book, approx 200 pages, 8vo, apparently penned by T. R. Bailey, Enon, Clarke County, OH. Embossed Enon Corporation seal on first flyleaf. Half-calf with marbled boards. Evidences extensive dampstaining and wrinkling, though most pages are very readable; front cover starting. Most pages provide instructions for making various kinds of paper, vat sizes, machine specifications, etc. Interspersed on blank pages are small history studies, Civil War facts; poetry and scripture. Page 60 contains General Longstreet’s Field Division, listing companies and battles participated in; another page has IOOF data, particularly for Greene County, OH. Data relating to the Battle of Gettysburg fills three pages. On another page is a recipe for relieving leg cramps. There are 6pp of day-by-day events occurring during the Civil War; 4pp of other military men and statesmen, including Sitting Bull and Daniel Boone; a page entitled “Famous Duels”; plus over a dozen pages of the Bailey family genealogy going back to late 18th century Ireland, dated “Dec 2, 1885.” There are lists of residents and deaths in Greenville, SC, 1881, National Cemeteries in the US and more. A fascinating almanac for the paper trade!
