PALMER BOLT ACTION CARBINE.

Cal. 50 RF. NSN. It is estimated that 1,001 of these lightweight handy carbines were made & they were the first bolt action cartridge firearm accepted for U.S. service. 1 Piece bbl./action is 23 3/4" long. Rear portion is threaded for rear of bolt w/ short handle which engages w/ interrupted screw threads. A long extractor lies along top of bolt. A spring loaded ejector is in bottom of cartridge tray. The elements of this design were way ahead of their day. Top rear of bbl. assembly is marked "Wm PALMER" "PATENT" "DEC. 22.1863". Rimfire cartridge is fired by modified percussion type hammer mounted on front spring. Island lock marked "U.S." "E.G. LAMSON & CO." "WINDSOR, VT". Lock is dated 1865 on tail. Walnut half stock held to bbl. w/ 1 split band is iron mounted & has "P" proof on most parts. U.S. inspectors initials "MM" are on left side of stock between saddle ring bar & front lock screw. CONDITION: fine. Bbl. retaining approx. 90% original blue. Lock has traces of original case hardening color which is also present on trigger guard, bbl. band & buttplate. Stock w/ most of its original oil finish has numerous marks light & deep & is rather dirty. Bore is bright & shiny. Lock is excellent. Carbine appears unfired.
