PAINTINGS - English School (17th Century), Portrait Of Sir Edward Coke (1552-1634), three-quarter length, wearing scarlet robes, canvas, 40in x 32in, 19th century gilt frame (see illustration) Sir Edward Coke was the pre-eminent jurist of his time. He entered Parliament in 1589, becoming Speaker of the House of Commons. In 1593 he was made Attorney General in preference to Sir Francis Bacon, thereafter a life-long enemy. He prosecuted at the trial of Sir Walter Raleigh. In 1606 he became Chief Justice of the Common Pleas and after 1613 Lord Chief Justice. He was a leader of the popular faction in opposition to James I and Charles I and was instrumental in the drafting of the Petition of Right in 1628. Provenance: possibly Longford Hall
