PAHANG: Bendahara Sewa Raja Wan Ahmad, 1863-1882, tin tampang (80.55g), AH1281, SS-15, Prid-56, "tin hat money", with plinth base neatly decorated with flower & lily cup design // Jawi tent pada awal bulan rabi 'al thani ini belanja pahang dari tarikh sanat 1281, naturally prepared with a hole, plus additional casting defects, VF, ex Charles Opitz Collection. These are variously known as a Tampang, Tin Hat, Pyramid or Pagoda money, although the latter two names are more common in Perak. They are an early form of currency with a value that was calculated against the amount of tin by weight which could be exchanged for one Spanish Silver dollar. There are a number of views as to when the Tampang first became recognized as money, but they were likely first used in the 17th century and made until the late 19th century.
