This rapidly executed study provides ample evidence ofthe remarkable virtuosity of the young draughtsman, not yet 20 years of age, who produced it. The style has much in common with that of the Modernista artists with whom Picasso began to associate himself from 1897, most notably Ramón Casas, Santiago Rusiñol and Isidro Nonell.
Casas, in particular, used charcoal to define form through drawing multiple contours. This approach, which eschewed tonal modulation, was particularly suited to Picasso, whose command of line drawing was, even amongst his older peers, without equal.
