PA. (Philadelphia). Bank Coffee House, Bank of the United States Bank. 6 1/4?. ND (ca. 1837). At first glance a scrip note. However, a subtle satire on the entire Bank of United State situation in 1837. At the left is a hound dog with the number "6" on his torso. His bones are sticking out and he is not well fed. At the right a water pump and an owl holding a branch. Text in the center states bearer is entitled to 6-1/4 cents at the Coffee House opposite the Bank of the United States. Below is text "A COLD CUT AT 10-1/2 O'CLOCK A.M." and "HOT POTATOES AT 6-1/2 O'CLOCK P.M.". At the bottom, "Banking Hours from Six O'Clock A.M. until 11 O'Clock P.M." This odd note came from the Western Reserve and is in none of the satirical collections we have studied over two decades. Subtle and delightful. Brittle paper with splits that are backed. Foxing across the center. Fine. Our estimate is conservative due to conditon. This could bring over the high estimate to the collector who appreciates its uniqueness.
Ex. Spink America - November 1996.
