P1853 ENFIELD SERGEANT'S RIFLE BY POTTS & HUNT.
Cal. .577. NSN. Bbl. measures 33”. Thomas Potts & Thomas Hunt formed a partnership in 1853 & operated throughout the Civil War years from their offices on Leman St. & their workshop in Tenter Ground. The firm sold thousands of arms to both the Confederacy & the Union, seemingly on a first-come, first-served basis in the highest traditions of British mercantilism. Bbl. has a front sight & rear folding sight. Bbl. is proofed on the left side, near the breech, crown over “P”, “25”, crown over “V” & an illegible proof. Lock is marked, “POTTS & HUNT LONDON” in front of the hammer. A nipple guard is present & attached to the front of the trigger guard w/ a brass chain. Iron trigger guard, buttplate, bbl. bands, nosecap, sling swivels & ramrod. Front bbl. band has a side lug for the P1853 Enfield yataghan style saber bayonet. Stock is proofed behind the rear trigger guard, crown over “H” & stamped “12”. CONDITION: bbl. has a dark patina w/ a few areas of faded plum brown. Lock has a similar finish. The remaining iron parts all have a dark patina w/ traces of fading finish. The stock is very solid w/ expected dents & dings but no major issues. Bore is good but a bit dirty w/ visible rifling.
