Pádraig Ó Mathúna was born in Kerry but lived much of his life in Cashel, Co. Tipperary, where he was a pharmacist and had his studio and gallery. His silver creations were inspired by ancient Celtic objects and his work is prized by collectors worldwide. In 1975 he was commissioned by Cardinal Conway, Archbishop of Armagh and Prelate of Ireland, to design a bowl for presentation to Pope Paul VI at the Canonisation of Saint Oliver Plunkett. In 1998 The National Museum of Ireland purchased several major works by Ó Mathúna and the artist also donated a number of works from his private collection and studio, before he moved back to Dún Chaoin. The works can be found in the Modern Irish Silver Collection (1738 to date) in Collins Barracks.
