ALS, one page, lightly-lined, 6 x 9.5, Murray Hill Hotel letterhead, April 25, 1870. Letter to journalist Frank G. Carpenter. In full: “Yours recd. I have more calls from Magazines & popular newspapers for what I can write–than I can supply. Every penny earned by my pen is given to worthy charitable objects & I don’t write anything without receiving liberal payment therefor.” In a postscript, Barnum adds “I nearly finished a fortnight ago an article on the subjects you name–for which either of 3 or 4 Magazines would gladly pay me liberally. PTB.” Letter is mounted to an identical size heavy stock card. Uneven toning, heavier over both signatures, pencil notations to bottom, a couple creases, and partial separations along mailing folds, otherwise very good condition. An interesting example of the consummate showman and businessman, sharing the wealth. Barnum was a significant contributor to Tufts University, with one of his gifts used to establish a natural history museum.
