Clarke sic of the army of the United States, From the mouth of the River Missouri through the interior parts of North America to the Pacific Ocean, During the Years 1804, 1805, and 1806. (Philadelphia: Printed for Mathew Carey, 1811), stated "Third Edition - With Six Engravings," frontis of "A Canoe striking on a Tree," 262 pages, original calf, rebacked, 16mo (4.5" x 6.5"). Patrick Gass was a sergeant in the Lewis and Clark Expedition, serving as a carpenter. He was the first to publish a journal of the expedition in 1807; even this third edition pre-dates the publication of Lewis and Clark's own journals. He is credited for first coining the term "Corps of Discovery" and was the last surviving member of the group, dying at age 99 in 1870. All engravings are intact including the interesting "Captain Lewis shooting an Indian." Several names of previous owners written on front and back endpapers, extensive foxing, else good with a tight text block.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
