Brigadier General of the Confederate Provisional Army (1818–1893) who commanded the forces at Charleston, where he ordered the bombardment of Fort Sumter. ALS signed “G. T. Beauregard,” one page, lightly-lined, 5.5 x 8.5, Park Avenue Hotel letterhead, October 3, 1883. Letter to Eben G. Scott. In full: “I thank you for the copy of 'The Development of Constitutional Liberty' you have been kind enough to send me. I will read it with much pleasure. It was recd. several days since, but I have been too busy to acknowledge it sooner.” A uniform shade of mild toning and some scattered light soiling, otherwise fine condition.
At the close of the war, the defeated rebel general struggled to rejoin the country he had fought against for so many years. Outraged over the excesses of Reconstruction, Beauregard considered leaving the United States, securing several job offers with foreign armies, but in the end decided to stay and rebuild his life in New Orleans. He remained politically active, wrote extensively on military operations, and maintained the charisma and dignity upon which he built his reputation during the war. A gracious letter to a historian whose book tackled the Constitutional crisis that led to the Confederacy’s secession twenty years earlier.
