Blistering, lengthy, three-stanza piece entitled “Old Glory Speaks,” type-written on an 8.5 x 11 undated sheet, signed “Owen Wister” at the conclusion. In part: “O say can you see the encompassing blight/That shrivels the faith your sires died in defending?/Shall the breath of usurpers extinguish the light//Which blazed forth at my birth? Is your manhood past mending?/If living too softly has jellied your soul,/If your flabbified brain is no longer a hater/Of tyrants, though once you cast off the control/Of a king, If you’re ready to throne a dictator,/Farewell! for I will not be mocked. And the flag/You salute will be empty of me: just a rag./For the Star-Spangled Banners not willing to wave/O’er a land neither free, nor a home of the brave.” In fine condition, with vertical fold through one letter of the signature, light mirroring of signature, and a bit of light toning in folds.
