Owen Wister, The Virginian First Edition
Owen Wister, The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains (New York: The MacMillan Company, 1902), first edition, 504 pages, illustrated, tan-cloth binding with red, gold and black lettering and decorations, 12mo (7.75” x 5.5”). Owen Wister (1860-1938), a close friend of President Theodore Roosevelt (to whom The Virginian is dedicated), is considered the “father of the Western novel.” Though highly mythologized, The Virginian was the first true novel dealing with the Old West. Its protagonist has been portrayed on the screen six times, most notably by Gary Cooper in the 1929 film version. Coop’s famous line, “If you want to call me that, smile,” originated in this film. Wister’s villain, Trampas, has been played by such ace “heavies” as Boris Karloff (on stage) and Walter Huston (in the 1929 film). The book, illustrated by Arthur I. Keller, is in very good condition with moderate wear and acidification.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
