Very rare letterhead that lists Ben Holladay as proprietor. Addressed to Judge WA Carter, Ft. Bridger. Message details the trip: creeks running high, "had to swim several of them, and change our coach at a ravine about 14 mile about 14 miles south of Halleck..." "Capt. Price is not here, the Gen. having moved his headquarters a few days ago to Julesburg...." Signed John Sharp, which may be Colonel John Sharp involved in the Utah Black Hawk War of 1865-71 as part of the Northern Militia. 10 x 8" Fort Halleck, established in 1862 near Elk Mountain in what is now Wyoming, was a small U.S. Army post built to protect travelers and stage stations along the Overland Trail during the Civil War era. Though active for only a decade, it served as a critical guard post against raids before being abandoned in 1870 when the Union Pacific Railroad shifted travel away from the trail. W.A. Carter was the post trader at Fort Bridger beginning in 1858. Along with his family, Carter lived at the fort, rebuilding and stocking it and eventually becoming Wyoming's first millionaire.
