Outstandingly framed and matted Civil War ensemble attributed to Private Ansel C. Colby, First Regiment, New York Light Artillery including a .36 caliber Manhattan percussion revolver, 6” barrel, wood grips, #60057, a brass powder flask, atintype of Colby in uniform, a GAR certificate (covering his period of veterans unit service and dated 1892) and a handwritten letter dated April 30, 1900, stating “To Whom It May Concern: I state that this Navy caliber revolver was used byme during the War Between the States. I purchased the pistol new shortly before my first enlistment about 1863. It was used at both battle of Gettysburg and during my second service at the siege of Richmond in Virginia. Witness my hand,Ansel Colby, Pvt. M Co., U.S. Lt. Art.”. The gun is in overall good condition showing a dark patina, good grips and good markings. Battery M of the First Regiment New York Light Artillery was known as “Cothran’s” (after the Regiment’sCaptain, George W. Cothran); they saw service at Antietam, Chancellorsville (where they suffered heavy casualties), Gettysburg, Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign and finally the Southern Eastern Seaboard Campaign.
