Outstanding half-stocked heavy barrel percussion plains type rifle by Louis Hoffman, Vicksburg, Mississippi, .60 cal., 33-1/2” barrel, brown finish to barrel, case hardened back action lock, checkered woodstock with circular engraved patchbox and double keyed barrel attachment to stock. This gun is in overall excellent condition showing the majority of its brown finish on the barrel, strong traces of case color onreceiver, side plate and hammer, Louis Hoffman marked lock plate, very good to fine bore, crisp action, sharp markings, single trigger, brass trigger guard, butt plate and ramrod ferrules; wood ramrod, engraved starinset into left side of butt stock; deluxe grained and checkered wood stock with some scattered scratches and mars from storage but otherwise retaining majority of finish. A beautiful half-stocked rifle made by awell-known Southern maker. Louis Hoffman of Vicksburg was a main supplier to the Confederacy and when Vicksburg fell he was put on trial for arming the insurgents. This rifle was specially built in .58 caliber
