Outstanding and important custom display cased Texas Cattle Baron Set of two guns including a highly engraved and gold inlaid Colt Storekeeper’s Model SAA revolver by Howard Dove and a highly engraved and gold inlaid Winchester Model 94AE Trapper’s model lever action carbine, also done by Howard Dove with paperwork from noted historian R. L. Wilson purporting this to be the last firearm decorated by Howard Dove prior to his death on November 1, 1994. The first gun of the set is the Colt SAA Storekeeper’s Model revolver, .45 cal., 3-1/4” barrel, blue and case hardened finish, deluxe custom checkered and carved wood grips, #150SE4. This piece of the set is in overall like new condition showing 99%+ blue and case hardening with extensive scroll engraving on all parts of the gun including the front sight and hammer; the gold ornamentation and inlay is exquisitely applied and includes a raised gold vignette of a cowboy on horseback roping a long horn steer on the left recoil shield; a raised gold vignette of the State flag of Texas on the loading gate; a raised gold vignette of the State of Texas on the right front side of the frame; a raised gold wreath with silver five point star on the left front side of the frame; a raised gold pair of boots with a silver lariat circling the boots on the top of the back strap; inlaid gold cattle brands “CV”, “A”, “YO” and “XIT”; back strap is gold inlaid “Texas Cattle Barons” and is bracketed with two silver stars; gold stars on butt strap with “Drover’s Midnight” engraved on either side of the stars; fine border gold inlay scrolls and lining on the frame, barrel, cylinder, straps and trigger guard; serial number on bottom of frame is also gold inlaid. The grips are excellent with custom deluxe checkering on both sides that include a fleur d’lis carving at the bottom portion of each side of the grips. The Winchester is engraved “en suite”, .45 Long Colt cal., 16” barrel, blue finish, deluxe checkered and carved wood stocks, #5596926; inscribed on the Floorplate: “Presented to Mstr. Engr. Howard M. Dove from the Custom Shop of the U.S.R. Arms Co.”. The Winchester is extensively scroll engraved with D+ coverage and 24 K white& yellow gold and sterling silver inlays with high relief engravings matching the garniture included on the above-described Colt SAA with cattle brands, map of Texas, flag of Texas, cowboy on horseback roping a long horn steer, etc. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase type examples of two of the most popular weapons of the Old West where no expense was spared to ornament both extensively and where the engraving and inlay work was performed by one of the best known and respected firearms engravers of the 20th century. Accompanying this set are two typed and hand signed letters describing additional details to the Winchester and Colt from Howard Dove’s widow Linda Dove. Also included is a color copy of the cover of the Man at Arms magazine dated June, 1996 where the Winchester is pictured on the cover. Est.: $20,000-$40,000.
