Outstanding Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with Casehardened Receiver in Extremely Rare 38-70
This is an excellent example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action 38-70 caliber Rifle that was manufactured in 1895. The rifle has a full octagon barrel with full length magazine. The barrel is fitted with a nickel-steel front sight and sporting rear sight. The barrel, magazine and bolt have a blue finish and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate are color case-hardened. The walnut stock and forearm have a low-luster varnish finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the legend: "- MANUFACTURED BY THE- / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two unequal lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber: "38-70 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: " - MODEL 1886-". The lower receiver tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates in two lines behind the trigger and the serial number "96181" behind the rear tang screw. The accompanying Cody Museum letter verifies the rifle configuration, 38-70 caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger and that it was received in the warehouse on November 7, 1895 and shipped from the warehouse November 16, 1901 to order number 123171.
