Outstanding Presentation Second Generation Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Ivory Grip Plaque Box and Display Case

Manufactured in 1960, this revolver was presented to Hugh Hedges after winning a fast draw competition at the Champaign, Illinois Centennial celebration. The revolver was presented to Mr. Hedges by Flint Hardin, a fast draw pro and J.W. Walters a local representative for Colt. Accompanying the revolver is a belief history of Mr. Hedges written by him, copy of a newspaper article about Hedges winning the competition and a photo of the Colt factory letter which verifies the caliber, barrel length, nickel finish, grips as "Not Listed" (came with black hard rubber grips according to Hedges) and that it was shipped as 1 to J.W. Walters in Champaign, Illinois on July 14, 1960. There is also a copy of a letter from Colt detailing a back strap inscription to Mr. Hedges and the cost. Mr. Hedges explains that he didn't have the engraving done because he put it off for 20 years and a refinished back strap would not match the rest of the revolver. A friend of Mr. Hedges, Bob Morrison, Colt's Vice President of Public Relations at the time cane up with the idea of a scrimshawed ivory grip. The revolver is fitted with a one-piece elephant ivory grip with Mr. Hedges "HHF" monogram on the left side and "PRESENTED TO/HUGH HEDGES/BY COLT'S PT. F.M C./1960" on the right side. The revolver has the standard markings and features otherwise. The revolver comes with a beautifully floral tooled (done by Hedges) black leather left handed holster and cartridge belt, the original black hinged lid box, the original black hard rubber grips, both marked "095" on the inside, a Colt Custom Shop presentation case with French cut red velvet lining and a walnut plaque with brass plate inscribed "1960/CHAMPAIGN CENTENNIAL/FAST DRAW CONTEST/FIRST PRIZE/PRESENTED TO/HUGH HEDGES/BY/COLT'S/PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG. CO. INC." Nickel plated Second Generation Single Action Army revolvers with 4 3/4 inch barrels chambered in 45 Colt are the scarcest and most desirable.

Excellent. The revolver retains 98% plus original lightly frosted nickel finish. There is a visible drag line on the cylinder. Hedges explains in the accompanying letter that "A few rounds were fired before it was retired in excellent condition." The grip is also excellent with a very attractive grain and color. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. The box is good with two separated corners on the lid, and some corner and edge wear. The plaque is very good with a few minor dents and scuffs on the wood and numerous scratches on the brass. The case is excellent with a few minor scratches and some edge wear on the exterior and minimal contact wear on the lining. The holster and belt are very good with some normal usage wear.
