The letter lists the caliber as "44 S &W", the barrel length as "5 1/2", the finish as "Blue" and states that the revolver was shipped to: "Murta, Appleton Co., Philadelphia, Pa.," on July 9, 1931. Wilson shows a total of 506 Single Action revolvers chambered for the .44 S&W Special cartridge. The revolver has the Colt high polish, pre-war blue finish on the barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and backstrap. The frame, hammer and loading gate have a casehardened finish with vivid case colors The trigger is niter blue. The revolver has two-piece, black, checkered, hard rubber stocks with the Rampant Colt in an oval at the top. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "COLT'S P.T. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in a single line. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the caliber designation: "RUSSIAN AND/S.&W. SPECIAL/44". The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt 'three-date/two-line' patent marking followed by the Rampant Colt trademark. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "881". The left front trigger guard bow is stamped with the assembler's mark "1" above the Colt "triangle/VP" proofmark. A small "F" inspection mark is stamped in the hammer slot above the firing pin hole. The full serial number, "352313" is stamped on the bottom of the frame and on the right side of the trigger guard and backstrap underneath the stocks. The full serial number is scratched on the inside of both stocks. The partial serial number "13" is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver is complete with the original deep purple cardboard box. The revolver serial number, "352313" is written in grease pencil on the bottom of the box. The box lid has "S. & W. CARTRIDGE" printed in black on a white end-label and "5 1/2 Colt's Army S.A. Revolver./RUBBER BLUE. .44" printed in white on a blue end label on the box body. Near new. The revolver appears to be un-fired and retains 99% plus of the original high polish blue finish and vivid case colors. Wear is limited to some faint turn marks near the cylinder notches and some traces of very minor flaking on the casehardening on the lower right side of the frame. The trigger retains 98% of the fiery niter blue finish. All of the screw heads are in perfect condition. The markings are crisp. The stocks are in new condition with no perceptible wear. The bore is bright. The carton is in fine condition with flaking along the edges of the lid and bottom, two broken corners. A 1-inch section is missing from the white label end of the carton the adjacent front edge of the lid. The carton is in original "untouched" condition. This is an outstanding, nearly new example of a scarce .44 S&W Pre-War Colt Single Action Army with the original carton. This is a revolver that would be very difficult to improve upon.
