Manufacturer: Peabody Model: Carbine
Peabody Breech-Loading Carbine manufactured by the Providence Tool Company, Providence, Rhode Island, between 1866 and 1871. The .50 caliber carbine has a blue barrel with casehardened barrel band, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate. The walnut stock and forearm are oil finished. The barrel is fitted with a folding leaf rear sight and a sling ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped with the legend "PEABODY'S PAT./JULY 22, 1862/MAN'F'D BY/PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROV. R.I." in five lines. The Peabody inspection mark for foreign contract arms which consists of the script letters "W.C." in a rectangle is stamped on the left stock wrist. The carbine has no visible foreign proofmarks or state property marks. Manufactured too late for service in the American Civil War, the Peabody carbine was purchased by the Canadian, French, Mexican and Spanish governments. At least 350 .50 caliber French contract Peabody carbines were purchased by South Carolina in 1877.

Gauge: 50 rimfire
Finish: blue/casehardened

Serial Number: NSN
Condition:
Excellent plus, as issued. The carbine has virtually no finish wear and remains in almost new condition. The barrel retains 99% of the military blue finish. The barrel band, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate have 98-99% of the case-hardened finish with vivid case colors. The stock and forearm are in nearly new condition with no significant handling storage marks. The factory inspection mark on the left side of the stock wrist is crisp and the receiver markings are sharp. This is an outstanding example of a scarce Peabody Breech loading carbine that would be very difficult to improve upon.
