Outstanding Maynard Second Model Breech-Loading Carbine
U.S. Contract Second Model Maynard Carbine manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Co., of Chicopee, Falls, Mass., between 1863 and 1865. Also known as the "Model 1863", this carbine lacks the patchbox and tape primer found on First Model carbines. The carbine has a blued, part-round, part-octagon barrel and hammer. The frame, lever and buttplate have a casehardened finish. The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The carbine has a sling bar and ring attached to the left side of the frame and is fitted with a folding, three-leaf, rear sight. The right side of the frame is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS.ARMS. CO./CHICOPEE FALLS.". The opposite side of the frame is marked: "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27.1851./DEC.6.1859." in three lines. The serial number, "9182" is stamped on the lower tang. A Ordnance sub-inspection mark, "G.W.S." is stamped on the left barrel flat and single letter sub-inspection marks are stamped on the rear sight and other components. The Ordnance sub-inspectors script rectangular "GWS" mark and the final inspector's script "JM" mark are stamped on the left side of the stock wrist. The Massachusetts Arms Co., manufactured 20,202 Second Model Carbines during the Civil War. Many of these carbines were issued to Federal cavalry regiments from Midwestern states.

Near new. This carbine is un-issued and retains at least 99% of the original blue and 98% casehardened finish. The case colors on the frame, hammer and loading lever are bright. The stock is in mint condition with all of the original finish and perfect inspection marks. The only visible finish wear on the carbine is some discoloration and fading on the casehardened finish of the buttplate. This is an outstanding example of an important Civil War cavalry carbine.
