This is a beautiful example of a late WWII K98 rifle as manufactured by the Bruno factory in Czechoslovakia that has been fitted with one of the late war variant Swept-Back style sniper mounts. These Swept-back mounts were produced at the very end of WWII and saw very limited use before the war ended. The standard style of Swept-back mount has been noted on both Mauser and J.P. Sauer and Sohns K98 rifles, while this variation, somewhat different in configuration maybe the equivalent Bruno factory variation. These late war mounts were intended to be an easy to produce, rigid and robust scope mount and base system that could be easily mounted on the standard K98 rifle, without specialized receivers or complicated soldering and mounting techniques, that utilized the new ZF4 style of scope that was also a war expedient version of the traditional German sniper scopes. The scope base is a combination of features of both the short side and long side rail models. It has the standard dovetail on top of the base and has been fitted to the left side of the receiver. It is attached with three larger screws, three smaller lock screws and two taper pins, however it has a longer than standard short side rail base, (similar to the long side rail models) that actually extends over the thumb slot in the side of the receiver almost to the bolt release. The mount itself is an all machined version that is of a two-piece construction with the late female dovetail slot on the underside of the mount with a single large locking lever on the left side also similar to the long side rails models. It is unproofed and is stamped with only the matching rifle serial on the front portion of the mount. It has the similar style stamped scope bands and currently it is fitted with a brand new, post war Czech produced ZF4 scope. The scope is marked with the single "OD" symbol on the top of the scope body for the Opticotechna factory in Brunn over "4X/4.5 Degree/27355". The scope has the correct post war, high polished blued finish and the mount and scope bands both have a late war style gray phosphate/parkerized style finish. The rifle itself is a mid-WWII standard K98 that is marked on top of the receiver ring "dot/1944" for the Bruno factory and year of manufacture. The right side has a double "Eagle 63" factory proofs with the left side of the receiver and barrel carrying a single Eagle firing proof. The rear underside of the barrel is marked with the "dot" in a shield factory barrel proof next to "JD" and a single "Eagle 63" proof. The serial number is marked on the rear of the barrel. The rifle has the late war stamped barrel bands, and trigger guard with a milled floor plate that are all unnumbered and unproofed. It is fitted with a blued bolt with the double gas holes on the underside with a large key type safety. The rifle has the correct wartime laminated hand guard and the stock has the matching serial number inside the barrel channel with a single "H" Heers Waffenamt proof on the right side with "dot" marked on the underside. It is complete with an original cleaning rod, sheet metal front sight cover and rubber muzzle cover.
BBL: 24 inch round
Stock: laminated
Gauge: 7.92 mm Mauser
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 85582
Condition: Excellent overall with 98% of the original blue finish on the rifle, with the trigger guard and scope mount having 99% of their phosphate/parkerized type of finish. The scope has 99% of it original high polish blued finish and has clear sharp optics. The stock and hand guard are both in very good plus condition with a nice matching medium brown unsanded finish, with a professionally repaired duffle bag cut under the rear barrel band. As noted the scope mount is matching to the rifle but the complete bolt assembly is mismatched. Regardless this is still an exceptionally rare and very seldom seen late war Swept back variant sniper rifle.
