Outstanding Late Production Type III National Match M1 Garand Rifle
This is a very good example of a late, Type 3 National Match M1 rifle. These rifles were the last version of National Match rifle that were produced, with most of them being based on earlier Type 1 National Match rifles that were rebuilt or earlier receiver pulled from inventory that were rebuilt to the latest National Match standards. These rifles used the last series of National Match barrels, usually dated in the 1962-1965 time frame. Some of these were produced at Springfield Armory with many of them being assembled at RIA after Springfield Armory was closed in late 1968. The receiver markings are as follows: "U.S. RIFLE, CAL. 30 M1, SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" over the serial number 5387835. The right side of the receiver is marked "Z A F6528291", and the barrel is marked "SA 7791035 3-63 Y17" with the "P, M and DOD acceptance proof marks. The front portion of the exposed barrel has the correct "NM" markings on the left side. The various parts are marked as follows: Trigger housing: D282890-12-SA; Trigger guard: stamped unmarked; Hammer: SA5546008; Safety: SA marked: Bolt: 6528287-SA over A16; Operating Rod: 7790722-RA with "NM" on top of the cocking handle; Bullet Guide: stamped unmarked; Follower Arm: unmarked; Op Rod Catch Assy: single bevel unmarked. The rear sight set is the late post-war National Match version that is marked "NHS" and "NM" on the windage knob. The sight base is marked "NM2/A" and the aperture is also the late hooded version marked ".595" and "NM". The gas cylinder is a late post war version marked "NM" on the rear tang with the wide base, round top gas cylinder lock, and the earlier two-slot gas plug. The front sight is also marked "NM/062" on the right side. The stock and hand guards are the correct walnut versions; they have the late accuracy improvements where the barrel band and front hand guard have been unitized (glued together ONLY) and the stock has been glass bedded. The left side of the stock has the DOD acceptance cartouche and a single "P" proof in the pistol grip area. The rifle is complete with a chamber cleaning tool, plastic oiler in the butt stock and a 1918 dated H&P Company leather sling.
BBL: 24 inch round

Finish: parkerized

Serial Number: 5387835

Excellent overall with 98% of the original arsenal parkerized finish overall showing some minor edge and high spot wear overall with more wear on the right side receiver side rail, the front and rear ends of the bolt the left side bolt recoil lug and the underside of the bolt and barrel from light firing. The stock and hand guards are all in excellent condition showing a lighter medium brown color with minor handling marks in a few places with clear and distinct cartouches and proofs. An excellent example of a late production National Match M1 Garand.
