This is an example of a truly extraordinary DWM Model 1908 German Navy Luger. These were the standard pre-WWI Navy issue Lugers issued to the Imperial German Navy all the way through WWI and even into the Weimar era, albeit almost all were reworked. (this example escaped that fate!) This series of Luger is easily to identify in that it lacks the grip safety from the 1906 models, it has the second pattern (upper) marked safety and it has no chamber date. The real scarcity of this model is that it has three original matching navy luger magazines, along with an original navy issue WWI era Luger ammunition pouch. The top of the chamber area as noted is undated, the right side of the barrel extension has the double Crown over "M" proofmarks with the smaller Imperial "Crown" firing proof and then again on the barrel extension next to the Navy proofs. As noted the other rare aspect of this lot is that it includes a super rare, original 1904 Luger ammunition pouch that holds two boxes of 9mm ammunition. This was a very early accessory that was later phased out of production with almost none having been seen over the years. The pouch itself is made of a brown pebble grain pattern leather material and the back of the pouch is correctly marked: "B. WIERDMANT/BERLIN Nr. 39/1914". This lot is accompanied by a copy of a picture of an early Imperial seaman, at the Troop Training center, at Dornitz, that has one of these early M04 Marine ammunition pouches. The Luger is marked as follows: the underside of the barrel has the bore markings along with the full serial number and so does the front of the frame. The last two digits of the serial number (24) are correctly stamped on the various small parts. As noted the magazines that accompany this pistol are the original prewar versions that have the nickel plated body with the wooden base that has the concentric circles on the ends. The bases are correctly numbered length wise on the base with the full serial number (5024), along with a single Crown "M" Navy acceptance proof on each base. One magazine was intended for the pistol and the other two spares are contained in an original, pre-WWI unmarked leather, double pocket magazine pouch. The pouch itself is dark brown in color that has the single closure tab on the front with a single brass stud, with a single horizontal loop on the back that is intended for the shoulder/carrying straps for the holster. The holster itself is an original unmarked Navy model that accommodates the six-inch barrel that has the cleaning rod pouch sewn on the side, with the pouch for the take-down tool on the inside of the flap. This lot does include an original unmarked takedown tool, (which was common for the Navy lugers) along with the rare first model, all brass cleaning rod with the zig-zag end. Also accompanied with this lot are two original boxes of WWI 9mm Luger ammunition. The base of each round of ammunition is marked "Ge/D/5-17" and the blue label on the outside of each box is marked: " 16 F/charfe/Pistolenpatronen 08./Gefertigt am 1 Juni 1917 Ge./PPR. 17 Feb. Ge.", each box holds 16 rds with only one box being full, while the other box holds only two cartridges. The owner states that this entire rig as it exists now came from an estate in Long Island. Even the ammunition was original to the pouch, as evidence by the condition and it was perhaps the biggest surprise, since the ammunition is rare and for it to still remain in the pouch is something not seen in either WWI or WWII German captured accoutrements.
BBL: 6 inch
Stock:
Gauge: 9 mm Luger
Finish: blue/straw colors
Grips: walnut checkered
Serial Number: 5024b
Condition: Excellent with 98% of the original blue finish with just the slightest blue wear on the usual holster wear points and the stock lug itself. The various small parts retain 90% plus of their straw colors overall. The grips are also in excellent condition with nice sharp, original checkering overall. The holster itself is also in fine condition with a nice medium brown color overall with nice tight stitching. The actual leather material appears to have been dyed black at some point, probably back in the early post-WWI era that has now hardened and flaked off in some areas, which now give the leather a blotchy appearance, but very old and all original. The magazine pouch also has a medium dark brown color with nice tight checkering, with a solid closure flap on the front. The ammunition pouch is in very fine condition with a nice light brown color overall with super sharp markings on the back. As noted this luger has all matching numbers to include the three magazines, with the firing pin having only a small number "3" located on the side, which we believe is an old inspector marked as it was covered in old, dryed hard grease, when viewed by this describer. The ammunition boxes are both in very good plus condition with fine labels that are mostly intact with some minor staining, with some slight discoloration to the ammunition itself. An extraordinary example of an early 1908 Navy luger that is complete with the magazines, and rare ammunition pouch that would be the center piece of any Luger collection that would be impossible to improve upon.
