Outstanding Exhibition Grade Factory Panel Scene Engraved Special Order Providence Tool Peabody & Martini Creedmoor Single Shot Target Rifle

This is an outstanding all original and seldom seen, extremely early (serial number 93) factory engraved, special order, exhibition grade, Peabody-Martini single shot Creedmoor Target Rifle. This beautiful rifle was manufactured by the Providence Tool Company of Providence, Rhode Island, circa 1875 to 1880s, for use in the "long-range" Creedmoor style target rifle matches. Several variations of Peabody-Martini style rifle were actually made by this company however it is estimated that no more than a handful of this super high end, deluxe factory engraved "Creedmoor" style rifle were ever manufactured. The original Creedmoor matches were established by a group of early NRA members trying to generate interest in long-range rifle marksmanship. The original 1000 yard rifle matches were first held in Creedmoor Farms in New York, circa 1876/77. This beautiful Creedmoor rifle was factory engraved on over 85% of the receiver with both side of the action being engraved in "three different" panel scenes that depict different game animals, surrounded by a very nicely engraved scroll pattern. The left side of the action shows a large bull elk in the center flanked by a grizzly bear on a cliff, with a large buck deer on the right side. All three as noted are framed in a circular picture/panel scene with all of them having a woodland scene. The right side shows a large bull moose in the center scene with a large American buffalo on the left and a large American eagle on the right side. As previously stated, all three of these animal scenes are set in a beautiful woodland/prairie scene. The receiver ring is also engraved with: "CREEDMOOR" in a Roman lettering with serifs. The trigger guard is also engraved with "PEABODY & MARTINI PATENTS". This rare rifle is fitted with its original 32 inch long, half-round, half-octagon barrel chambered in 45 caliber. The barrel is fitted with a very rare early, windage adjustable and very heavy duty, globe front sight with the pin-head front sight post, and a barrel mounted, short staff, factory folding target rear sight. Additionally this rare rifle is also fitted with the ubiquitous, tang mounted, mid-range target peep sight with a hadley eye-cup. The rear sight is graduated on the side of the staff from 1-6 (100-600) yards The top of the barrel is marked in one line "MANUFACTURED BY THE PROVIDENCE TOOL Co. PROVIDENCE RI U.S.A." with no visible caliber markings, however we assume it is 45 caliber. The receiver has a checkered thumb panel on the upper right side and an engraved loaded indicator and sliding safety lever. The exceptionally rare rifle is stocked in beautiful English walnut with a checkered pistol grip and wrist area and it fitted with a crescent style steel buttplate. It is if fitted with a standard forearm with a steel, Schnabel forearm tip with a short checkered panel on each side. This rifle has a blued finish with a color case hardened action, trigger guard and loading lever.
