These rifles were the answer to the Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle and although they never attained the same status as the Winchester rifles, some consider them to be a better and stronger than the Winchester rifles. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked "MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NEW-HAVEN, CT. U.S.A./PATENTED.OCT. 11. 1887, APRIL 2. 1889, AUGUST 1. 1893" and the left side is marked "SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL". The top of the receiver is marked in script "MARLIN SAFETY", the right rear barrel flat is marked with a "JM" in an oval and the upper tang is marked "MODEL/1895". It is equipped with a German silver blade front and adjustable sporting rear sights, standard full length magazine tube and mounted with a smooth forearm with a straight grip stock and crescent buttplate.
