Manufactured circa 1862 - 1865 with a total production of only approximately 12,500. The lock is dated 1863 behind the hammer, has the eagle/shield over "U.S." and "REMINGTON'S/ILION, N.Y." in front of the hammer and there is a Sub-Inspectors "L" stamped at the front. The top of the barrel at the breech is dated "1863" over the "V/P/eagle head" proofs. The left rear flat is marked "STEEL" and "R.K.A". The front sight is fixed and the rear sight is a three folding leaf type with "1", "3" and "5" graduation markings. There is a bayonet lug mounted on the right side of the barrel 3 inches back of the muzzle. The barrel is blue, casehardened lock and hammer with all brass mountings. Iron ramrod with tulip head. Mounted with a full one-piece straight grip walnut stock with a brass carbine style buttplate and patch box. The patch box is stamped with an "L" and the buttplate tang is stamped with "US" and a small "S". The left stock flat is marked with two clear boxed cartouches. The patch box contains an extra percussion nipple. With an original tulip head iron ram rod and a wooden barrel plug.The rifle is complete with an unmarked brass handled sword bayonet, leather scabbard with brass tip and troat, and leather frog. One side of the blade near the handle is marked with a small "H", one side of the hand guard is marked with an "H" and "S" on the opposite and the top of the handle is marked with a"B.H." The top of the frog stud is marked with the letter "L".

Excellent. The barrel retains 90% plus original blue finish with some scattered thinning. The lock retains 98% original bright case colors. The hammer retains 80% original case colors with areas fading to a smooth gray. The brass components remain bright and show some scratches through the original lacquer finish. The stock is also excellent with a few overall scattered minor pressure dents and scratches. As noted above the cartouches are clear. The markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent. The rifle appears unfired and unissued. The bayonet is very fine with a bright blade showing some minor discoloration and the handle has a pleasant aged patina. The scabbard and frog are good. The frog is dried some and the brass tip and throat have a dark aged patina.
